Bangladesh is a small country of 148.460 square kilometers. But it is burdened with a huge population. At present it has a population over 160 million. About 1000 people live per square kilometer here. Every year more than two million people are being added to our population. 

The population is an asset of a country. But it becomes a problem when the country cannot afford its people the basic necessaries of life like food, clothing, education, medicine and shelter etc. In Bangladesh it is impossible to provide all these necessaries to the people. 

There are many reasons behind this rapid growth of population. The main reason is illiteracy, and religious superstition. Early marriage, polygamy and dogmatism are also responsible for this high growth rate of population. Moreover, the lack of social awareness contributes much to overpopulation. The population of our country is increasing at an alarming rate. 

The effect of over population is very dangerous. Crowds are found everywhere in buses, trains, bazaars, schools and colleges. Due to lack of shelter many people sleep under the open sky, under the large tree and at railway station. The rate of unemployment is increasing every year. Unemployment causes frustration and unrest in the society. As a result the situation of law and order is now going out of control. Again, the country cannot feed all her people properly because the production of food cannot keep pace with her increasing people. As a yesult, there is the shortage of food in our country. When a country has to remain busy to feed its people, it is not possible for that  country to implement any development programme. Thus, over population creates much pressure on all sectors of economy. All these have adverse impacts on our life and society. 

The population problem is a great malady for Bangladesh. But this can be solved if the government and the people are firmly determined to control birth rate and grow more food at the same time. In addition. it cannot be solved if measure should not be taken to remove. illiteracy from society and early marriage should not be abolished. Furthermore, programmes must be taken to create awareness among the mass people about the adverse impacts of over population. Therefore, all the people of Bangladesh and the government should join hands to meet the crisis right at this moment before it is too late. Otherwise, our progress and development as a nation will be greatly hampered and we will lag behind in every sphere of life.

অনুবাদঃ বাংলাদেশ 148.460 বর্গ কিলোমিটারের একটি ছোট দেশ। কিন্তু এটা বিশাল জনসংখ্যার বোঝা। বর্তমানে এর জনসংখ্যা 160 মিলিয়নেরও বেশি। এখানে প্রতি বর্গকিলোমিটারে প্রায় 1000 লোক বাস করে। প্রতি বছর আমাদের জনসংখ্যার সাথে দুই মিলিয়নেরও বেশি মানুষ যুক্ত হচ্ছে।

জনসংখ্যা একটি দেশের সম্পদ। কিন্তু এটা একটা সমস্যা হয়ে দাঁড়ায় যখন দেশ তার জনগণকে জীবনের মৌলিক চাহিদা যেমন খাদ্য, বস্ত্র, শিক্ষা, ওষুধ ও বাসস্থান ইত্যাদি জোগাড় করতে পারে না।

এই দ্রুত জনসংখ্যা বৃদ্ধির পেছনে অনেক কারণ রয়েছে। এর প্রধান কারণ অশিক্ষা, এবং ধর্মীয় কুসংস্কার। জনসংখ্যার এই উচ্চ বৃদ্ধির জন্য বাল্যবিবাহ, বহুবিবাহ এবং গোঁড়ামিও দায়ী। অধিকন্তু, সামাজিক সচেতনতার অভাব অতিরিক্ত জনসংখ্যার জন্য অনেক বেশি অবদান রাখে। আমাদের দেশের জনসংখ্যা উদ্বেগজনক হারে বাড়ছে।

অতিরিক্ত জনসংখ্যার প্রভাব খুবই বিপজ্জনক। বাস, ট্রেন, বাজার, স্কুল-কলেজ সর্বত্রই ভিড় দেখা যায়। আশ্রয়ের অভাবে অনেকেই খোলা আকাশের নিচে, বড় গাছের নিচে ও রেলস্টেশনে ঘুমায়। প্রতি বছর বেকারত্বের হার বাড়ছে। বেকারত্ব সমাজে হতাশা ও অশান্তি সৃষ্টি করে। ফলে আইনশৃঙ্খলা পরিস্থিতি এখন নিয়ন্ত্রণের বাইরে চলে যাচ্ছে। আবার, দেশ তার সমস্ত মানুষকে সঠিকভাবে খাওয়াতে পারে না কারণ খাদ্য উৎপাদন তার ক্রমবর্ধমান জনগণের সাথে তাল মিলিয়ে চলতে পারে না। ফলে আমাদের দেশে খাদ্য সংকট দেখা দিয়েছে। একটি দেশ যখন তার জনগণকে খাওয়ানোর জন্য ব্যস্ত থাকতে হয়, তখন সে দেশের পক্ষে কোনো উন্নয়ন কর্মসূচি বাস্তবায়ন করা সম্ভব হয় না। এইভাবে, জনসংখ্যার বেশি অর্থনীতির সব সেক্টরের উপর অনেক চাপ সৃষ্টি করে। এসবই আমাদের জীবন ও সমাজে বিরূপ প্রভাব ফেলে।

জনসংখ্যা সমস্যা বাংলাদেশের জন্য একটি বড় সমস্যা। কিন্তু সরকার ও জনগণ যদি জন্মহার নিয়ন্ত্রণে দৃঢ়ভাবে দৃঢ়প্রতিজ্ঞ হয় এবং একই সঙ্গে আরও বেশি খাদ্য উৎপাদন করে তাহলে এর সমাধান হতে পারে। এছাড়াও. এটা সমাধান করা যাবে না যদি ব্যবস্থা অপসারণ করা উচিত নয়. সমাজ থেকে নিরক্ষরতা এবং বাল্যবিবাহ বিলুপ্ত করা উচিত নয়। অধিকন্তু, জনসংখ্যার বিরূপ প্রভাব সম্পর্কে জনগণের মধ্যে সচেতনতা সৃষ্টির জন্য কর্মসূচি গ্রহণ করতে হবে। তাই দেরি হওয়ার আগেই এই মুহূর্তে বাংলাদেশের সকল জনগণ ও সরকারের উচিত এই সংকট মোকাবেলায় হাত মেলানো। তা না হলে জাতি হিসেবে আমাদের অগ্রগতি ও উন্নয়ন ব্যাপকভাবে বাধাগ্রস্ত হবে এবং জীবনের সর্বক্ষেত্রে আমরা পিছিয়ে পড়ব।
