Last month I had an opportunity to visit Sonargaon with my parents and cousins. I heard and read a lot about this historical place. So, I became extremely happy when my father told me about the visit. On the appointed day. we started for Sonargaon by a hired microbus at about 9 o'clock in the morning. We reached at around 11. It is located near the modern industrial river port of Naravanganj in Bangladesh. We got down from tile microbus. The place immediately took us in the thirteenth century. 

We walked about and saw the relics of the time. We learnt that Sonargaon means 'City of Gold'. It was a historic administrative, commercial and maritime center in Bengal We also learnt that it was the seat of the medieval Muslim rulers- and governors of eastern Bengal. It was an administrative center of Fakhruddin Mubarak Shah's sultanate, the Bengal Sultanate and the Kingdom of Bhati. 'We came to know that the name Sonargaon came as the Bangla version of the ancient name 'Suvarnagramal. Buddhist ruler Danujamadhava Dasharathadeva shifted his capital to 'Suvarnagrarna' from Bikrampur sometime in the middle of the 13th century. In early 14th century, Bauddha ruling in this area ended when Sharnsuddin Firoz Shah occupied and annexed it to his kingdom. Every structure there spoke of the history of the period. 

We visited tok Shilpa Jadughar' (Folk Art and Craft Museum) of Sonargaon which was established by our greatest Bangladeshi painter Joynul Abedin on March 12, 1975. The museum took us to a rich world of art and craft showing our glorious culture and heritage. 

The visit was exciting in the sense that it took us to a period we did not belong to. It gave us a sense of pride and honour of having such a society in the remote past.
