The Scholar and the Boatman - A boatman was plying a boat. There was a scholar in the boat as a passenger. The scholar was enjoying his journey very much because the weather was pleasant. He was gossiping with the boatman. "Do you have any knowledge about the creation of the universe?" 

He asked. "No," the boatman replied. He got astonished and said, "Without the knowledge of astronomy, half of your life is spoilt." The boatman became sad and thought of the uselessness of his life. The scholar again asked the boatman, "Do you know the history of human civilization?" The boatman replied the same. 

This time, the scholar told the boatman that he had already spoilt three-fourths of his life and he could not come to any use to the society. The boatman remained silent and kept on rowing the boat in a sad mood. Suddenly, the weather became gusty. The sky became overcast with clouds. There was darkness all around. 

Then it started to rain heavily with lightening. The boat was about to capsize. The scholar was trembling with fear. The boatman asked the scholar, "Sir, do you know how to swim?" Hearing the question, the scholar started to cry and replied in negative. Now, the boatman said, "Alas! Your life is totally spoilt. Pray to God for your safety."

অনুবাদঃ পণ্ডিত এবং নৌকার মাঝি - একটি নৌকার মাঝি ছিল একটি নৌকা। নৌকায় যাত্রী হিসেবে একজন আলেম ছিলেন। আবহাওয়া মনোরম হওয়ায় পণ্ডিত তার যাত্রা খুব উপভোগ করছিলেন। তিনি নৌকার মাঝির সাথে গল্প করছিল। 

"তোমার কি মহাবিশ্ব সৃষ্টি সম্পর্কে কোন জ্ঞান আছে?" জিজ্ঞেস করলেন। "না," মাঝি জবাব দিল। তিনি অবাক হয়ে বললেন, জ্যোতির্বিদ্যা না জানলে তোমার জীবনের অর্ধেক নষ্ট হয়ে যায়। 

নৌকার মাঝি দুঃখী হয়ে উঠল এবং তার জীবনের অসারতার কথা ভাবল। পণ্ডিত আবার নৌকার মাঝিকে জিজ্ঞেস করলেন, তুমি কি মানব সভ্যতার ইতিহাস জানো? নৌকার মাঝিও একই জবাব দিল। 

এবার সেই পণ্ডিত নৌকার মাঝিকে বললেন যে তিনি ইতিমধ্যে তার জীবনের তিন-চতুর্থাংশ নষ্ট করেছেন এবং তিনি সমাজের কোন কাজে আসতে পারেননি। নৌকার মাঝি চুপ করে রইলো এবং বিষন্ন মেজাজে নৌকা চালাতে থাকলো। 

হঠাৎ করেই আবহাওয়া ঝোড়ো হয়ে গেল। আকাশ মেঘে ছেয়ে গেল। চারিদিকে অন্ধকার। এরপর শুরু হয় প্রবল ঝড়ো হাওয়াসহ বৃষ্টি। নৌকাটি ডুবে যাওয়ার উপক্রম হয়েছিল। পণ্ডিত ভয়ে কাঁপছিলেন। নৌকার মাঝি পণ্ডিতকে জিজ্ঞেস করলেন, স্যার, আপনি কি সাঁতার জানেন? 

প্রশ্ন শুনে পণ্ডিত কাঁদতে লাগলেন এবং নেতিবাচক জবাব দিলেন। এখন, নৌকার মাঝি বলল, "হায়! তোমার জীবন একেবারে নষ্ট হয়ে গেছে। তোমার নিরাপত্তার জন্য ঈশ্বরের কাছে প্রার্থনা করো।"
