The Bangabandhu-l Satellite is a milestone in scientific research of the country. It is the first Bangladeshi geostationary communications satellite. It is named after the father of the nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. It was launched from the Kennedy Space Centre in Florida, the USA at 2.14 am on May 12, 2018. 

The project is being implemented by Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC). The satellite is expected to be located at the 119.1° East longitude geostationary slot. It is designed and manufactured by Thales Alenia Space and its launch provider is SpaceX. The total cost of the satellite was projected to be 248 million US dollars. 

Two ground stations for controlling the satellite have already been built at Joydebpur of Gazipur and Rangamati's Betbunia. The satellite has 15 years for mission life span while another three years for its design. The Bangabandhu-l is a big step forward towards achieving' selfdependency. It will open up enormous opportunities providing three types of advantages involving fields of field of information and communication technology (ICT) and broadcasting industry alongside brightening Bangladesh image. 

It will save the country a huge amount of foreign currency spent on buying satellite bandwidth from foreign companies. Besides, it will give impetus to telecommunication services and television broadcasting. Moreover, it will also improve material data collection, weather prediction capacity, and mapping of natural resources. 

অর্থঃ বঙ্গবন্ধু স্যাটেলাইট দেশের বৈজ্ঞানিক গবেষণায় একটি মাইলফলক। এটি বাংলাদেশের প্রথম জিওস্টেশনারি কমিউনিকেশন স্যাটেলাইট। জাতির পিতা বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিবুর রহমানের নামে এর নামকরণ করা হয়েছে। এটি 12 মে, 2018 তারিখে 2.14 টায় মার্কিন যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের ফ্লোরিডার কেনেডি স্পেস সেন্টার থেকে উৎক্ষেপণ করা হয়েছিল।

With a total mass of 3700 kg and powered by 2 deployable solar arrays and batteries, the expected longevity of the satellite is 15 years. The satellite provides Ku-band and C-band television broadcast and data relay services across Bangladesh and neighboring areas. This satellite will bring about enormous development and uninterrupted telecommunication system in Bangladesh. country's television channels have been renting bandwidth from Chinese, Indian and Singaporean satellites at a cost of about $14 million a year. It is expected that Bangladesh will not only save such amount of money in the future, but also would earn a lot by letting other countries to lease the unused bandwidth. The launch of satellite Bangabandhu-1 by Bangladesh brings both prospects and challenges as it is expected to help the country save foreign currency, while the challenges remain in effectively running the venture.
