The most significant event for Bangladesh in the last century has been its emergence. Bangladesh emerged as an independent country on the 16th December 1971 from Pakistan. Before 1971 we were a part of the then Pakistan and our country was known as East Pakistan. 

The  pakistani ruler oppressed us in many ways. They did not give our rights. It led to raise the Bengali nationalist and self-determination movement in East Pakistan. But on the night of 25th March 1971, the barbarous Pakistani army invaded our mother land. 

They killed thousands of men and women and injured a lot. Many women were tortured. The then ruler of Pakistan arrested Prime Ministerelect Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. But the people of the country could not bear it any more.

Many common people with the help of Indian government fought courageously against the Pakistani army. After nine months of long resistance, the Pakistani armies were bound to surrender in Dhaka. Bangladesh got her freedom sacrificing the lives of 30 lac people. 

Thus Bangladesh emerged as a new country and got a place in the world map. The majority of member states in the United Nations recognised Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh in 1972.

অর্থঃ গত শতাব্দীতে বাংলাদেশের জন্য সবচেয়ে তাৎপর্যপূর্ণ ঘটনা হল এর আবির্ভাব। ১৯৭১ সালের ১৬ ডিসেম্বর পাকিস্তান থেকে স্বাধীন দেশ হিসেবে আত্মপ্রকাশ করে বাংলাদেশ। ১৯৭১ সালের আগে আমরা তৎকালীন পাকিস্তানের অংশ ছিলাম এবং আমাদের দেশ পূর্ব পাকিস্তান নামে পরিচিত ছিল।

পাকিস্তানি শাসক আমাদের নানাভাবে অত্যাচার করেছে। তারা আমাদের অধিকার দেয়নি। এর ফলে পূর্ব পাকিস্তানে বাঙালি জাতীয়তাবাদী ও আত্মনিয়ন্ত্রণ আন্দোলন গড়ে ওঠে। কিন্তু ১৯৭১ সালের ২৫শে মার্চ রাতে বর্বর পাকিস্তানি বাহিনী আমাদের মাতৃভূমিতে হানা দেয়।

তারা হাজার হাজার নারী-পুরুষকে হত্যা করেছে এবং প্রচুর আহত করেছে। অনেক নারী নির্যাতনের শিকার হয়েছেন। পাকিস্তানের তৎকালীন শাসক নির্বাচিত প্রধানমন্ত্রী শেখ মুজিবুর রহমানকে গ্রেফতার করেন। কিন্তু দেশের মানুষ তা আর সহ্য করতে পারেনি।

ভারত সরকারের সহায়তায় অনেক সাধারণ মানুষ সাহসিকতার সঙ্গে পাকিস্তানি সেনাবাহিনীর বিরুদ্ধে যুদ্ধ করেছে। দীর্ঘ নয় মাস প্রতিরোধের পর পাকিস্তানি বাহিনী ঢাকায় আত্মসমর্পণ করতে বাধ্য হয়। ৩০ লাখ মানুষের প্রাণ বিসর্জন দিয়ে বাংলাদেশ পেয়েছিল স্বাধীনতা।

এভাবে বাংলাদেশ একটি নতুন দেশ হিসেবে আত্মপ্রকাশ করে এবং বিশ্বের মানচিত্রে স্থান পায়। জাতিসংঘের সংখ্যাগরিষ্ঠ সদস্য রাষ্ট্র 1972 সালে গণপ্রজাতন্ত্রী বাংলাদেশ সরকারকে স্বীকৃতি দেয়।
