Sheikh Saadi was a great poet in Iran. He used to lead a very simple life. Once on his way to the court of the king of Iran, he took shelter in a nobleman's house for a night. He was then in very simple dressed. 

The servants of that house took him for an ordinary man. They did not care for his comfort at all. They gave him very simple food. Saadi felt very sad but did not tell anything to anybody and somehow passed the night. In the morning, he started for the court. He reached the court and stayed there for some days. 

On his way back home, he again took shelter in that nobleman's house. This time he was in rich clothes. The nobleman took him to be an elite one as he noticed him in gorgeous dress. He welcomed him very cordially and showed him much respect. After sometime, the servants came with rich food for him. Saadi understood the reason why he was treated so nicely. 

So, he decided to teach him a good lesson. When he sat down to eat, a strange thing happened. In stead of eating the delicious foods, he began to put them into his pockets. The nobleman as well as his servants, was surprised at this. The nobleman asked politely, “What are you doing Sir?” Saadi replied, "I'm doing the right thing. Some days ago when I came to your house in plain dress, nobody cared for my comfort. 

Now, I'm in gorgeous dress and all of you are showing respect to me and serving rich food. I think, it is not I but my dress which has earned this food. So, I'm putting them into my pockets." Hearing this, the nobleman understood his fault. He was very much ashamed and begged Saadi's pardon.

অর্থঃ শেখ সাদী ইরানের একজন মহান কবি ছিলেন। তিনি খুব সাধারণ জীবনযাপন করতেন। একবার ইরানের রাজার দরবারে যাওয়ার পথে এক রাত্রির জন্য এক সম্ভ্রান্তের বাড়িতে আশ্রয় নেন। তখন তিনি খুব সাধারণ পোশাকে ছিলেন।

সেই বাড়ির চাকররা তাকে একজন সাধারণ মানুষ হিসেবে নিয়ে গেল। তারা তার স্বাচ্ছন্দ্যের জন্য মোটেও পরোয়া করেনি। তারা তাকে খুব সাধারণ খাবার দিল। সাদির খুব মন খারাপ লাগল কিন্তু কাউকে কিছু না বলে রাতটা কেটে গেল। সকালে তিনি আদালতে যাত্রা শুরু করেন। তিনি আদালতে পৌঁছান এবং সেখানে কিছু দিন অবস্থান করেন।

বাড়ি ফেরার পথে তিনি আবার সেই সম্ভ্রান্তের বাড়িতে আশ্রয় নেন। এবার তিনি ধনী পোশাকে ছিলেন। অভিজাত ব্যক্তি তাকে অভিজাত ব্যক্তি হিসাবে নিয়েছিলেন কারণ তিনি তাকে টকটকে পোশাকে লক্ষ্য করেছিলেন। তিনি তাকে খুব আন্তরিকভাবে স্বাগত জানান এবং তাকে অনেক সম্মান প্রদর্শন করেন। কিছুক্ষণ পর চাকররা তার জন্য প্রচুর খাবার নিয়ে এল। তার সাথে এত সুন্দর আচরণ করার কারণটা সাদি বুঝতে পেরেছিল।

তাই, তিনি তাকে একটি ভাল পাঠ শেখানোর সিদ্ধান্ত নিয়েছে। খেতে বসলে এক অদ্ভুত ঘটনা ঘটে। সুস্বাদু খাবারগুলো খাওয়ার বদলে সে সেগুলো নিজের পকেটে রাখতে লাগলো। সম্ভ্রান্ত ব্যক্তি এবং তার চাকরগণও এতে বিস্মিত হলেন। সম্ভ্রান্ত ভদ্রলোক জিজ্ঞেস করলেন, "কি করছেন স্যার?" সাদি উত্তর দিল, "আমি ঠিক কাজ করছি। কিছু দিন আগে যখন আমি সাদামাটা পোশাকে তোমার বাড়িতে এসেছি, তখন কেউ আমার আরামের কথা চিন্তা করেনি।

এখন, আমি জমকালো পোশাক পরে আছি এবং আপনারা সবাই আমাকে সম্মান দেখাচ্ছেন এবং সমৃদ্ধ খাবার পরিবেশন করছেন। আমার মনে হয়, আমি নই, আমার পোষাকই এই খাবার অর্জন করেছি। তাই, আমি সেগুলো আমার পকেটে রাখছি।" এই কথা শুনে সম্ভ্রান্ত ব্যক্তি তার দোষ বুঝতে পারলেন, তিনি খুব লজ্জিত হলেন এবং সাদীর কাছে ক্ষমা প্রার্থনা করলেন।

Dress doesn't make one great completing story

The king of Iran used to invite the great poet Sheikh Saadi very often to his court. Once, on his way to the king's court, the poet took shelter in a nobleman's house for a night. He was then wearing a very ordinary and cheap dress. 

The nobleman could not recognize him and did not behave well with him. Next day, Sheikh Saadi left the place for the court of the king and was received with honour there. He stayed there for a few days, and received rich gifts from the king. On his way back home, he again visited that nobleman's house wearing a costly and gorgeous dress. 

This time, the nobleman treated him with the best of the foods and comfort. While eating, he was surprised to see the rich delicious food and understood the nobleman's attitude. 

Then, Sheikh Saadi, instead of eating the food, started putting them into the pockets of his rich dress. Being astonished, the nobleman asked him about his mysterious behaviour. 

The poet answered that the given food was for his dress as he failed to receive same hospitality when he was in simple dress. The nobleman realized his earlier folly and became ashamed. He begged pardon to Saadi and also promised that he would never judge anyone by their dress. Being a kind-hearted man, Saadi forgave him.

অনুবাদঃ ইরানের বাদশাহ মহান কবি শেখ সাদীকে প্রায়ই তার দরবারে আমন্ত্রণ জানাতেন। একবার রাজার দরবারে যাওয়ার পথে কবি এক রাত্রির জন্য এক সম্ভ্রান্তের বাড়িতে আশ্রয় নেন। তখন তার পরনে ছিল খুবই সাধারণ এবং সস্তা পোশাক। সম্ভ্রান্ত ব্যক্তি তাকে চিনতে পারেনি এবং তার সাথে ভাল ব্যবহারও করতে পারেনি। 

পরের দিন, শেখ সাদী রাজার দরবারে স্থান ত্যাগ করেন এবং সেখানে তাকে সম্মানের সাথে গ্রহণ করা হয়। তিনি সেখানে কয়েকদিন অবস্থান করেন এবং রাজার কাছ থেকে প্রচুর উপহার পান। বাড়ি ফেরার পথে, তিনি আবার দামী এবং জমকালো পোশাক পরে সেই সম্ভ্রান্তের বাড়িতে গিয়েছিলেন। 

এই সময়, সম্ভ্রান্ত ব্যক্তি তার সাথে সর্বোত্তম খাবার এবং আরামের সাথে আচরণ করেন। খাওয়ার সময় তিনি বিস্ময়কর সুস্বাদু খাবার দেখে আশ্চর্য হলেন এবং অভিজাতের মনোভাব বুঝতে পারলেন। 

অতঃপর শেখ সাদী খাবার খাওয়ার পরিবর্তে তার ধনী পোষাকের পকেটে ঢোকাতে লাগলেন। বিস্মিত হয়ে অভিজাত ব্যক্তি তাকে তার রহস্যময় আচরণ সম্পর্কে জিজ্ঞাসা করলেন। 

কবি উত্তর দিয়েছিলেন যে প্রদত্ত খাবারটি তার পোশাকের জন্য ছিল কারণ তিনি সাধারণ পোশাক পরে একই আতিথেয়তা গ্রহণ করতে ব্যর্থ হন। সম্ভ্রান্ত লোকটি তার আগের মূর্খতা বুঝতে পেরে লজ্জিত হলেন। 

তিনি সাদির কাছে ক্ষমা প্রার্থনা করেছিলেন এবং প্রতিশ্রুতি দিয়েছিলেন যে তিনি তাদের পোশাক দ্বারা কাউকে বিচার করবেন না। একজন সহৃদয় মানুষ হওয়ায় সাদী তাকে ক্ষমা করে দিয়েছিলেন।
