Once a golden necklace was lost from a rich man's house. A few servants worked in that house. Naturally it was suspected that any one of the servants had stolen the necklace ---

Once a golden necklace was lost from a rich man's house. A few servants worked in that house. Naturally it was suspected that any one of the servants had stolen the necklace. Each of them was asked. But nobody confessed the guilt. 

So, the master of the house lodged a complaint before the Judge. All of the servants were summoned to the court. But all of the servants denied the charge. Then the Judge hit upon a plan. He gave each of them a stick of same length and told them to submit them to the court the following day. 

He told them that the person who had stolen the necklace, his stick would increase an inch. When they returned home, they kept their sticks as they were. But the servant who stole the stick shorte an inch. The next day when everybody submitted the sticks, it was found that one st short by an inch. Then the thief was detected and he was given punishment.

অর্থঃ একবার এক ধনীর বাড়ি থেকে সোনার হার হারিয়ে গেল। সেই বাড়িতে কয়েকজন চাকর কাজ করত। স্বভাবতই সন্দেহ হয়েছিল যে কোনও চাকর গলার হার চুরি করেছে। তাদের প্রত্যেককে জিজ্ঞাসা করা হয়েছিল। কিন্তু কেউ দোষ স্বীকার করেনি।

তাই বাড়ির কর্তা বিচারকের কাছে অভিযোগ দায়ের করেন। চাকরদের সবাইকে আদালতে তলব করা হয়। কিন্তু চাকরদের সবাই অভিযোগ অস্বীকার করেছে। এরপর বিচারক একটি পরিকল্পনায় আঘাত করেন। তিনি তাদের প্রত্যেককে একই দৈর্ঘ্যের লাঠি দেন এবং পরের দিন আদালতে জমা দিতে বলেন।

তিনি তাদের বলেন, যে ব্যক্তি গলার হার চুরি করেছে, তার লাঠি এক ইঞ্চি বেড়ে যাবে। বাড়ি ফিরে তারা তাদের লাঠিগুলো যেমন ছিল তেমনি রেখেছিল। কিন্তু যে ভৃত্য লাঠি চুরি করেছিল সে এক ইঞ্চি ছোট। পরের দিন সবাই যখন লাঠি জমা দিল, দেখা গেল এক ইঞ্চি ছোট। এরপর চোর ধরা পড়ে এবং তাকে শাস্তি দেওয়া হয়।
