Once there lived a woodcutter. He was very poor but honest. He lived on the bank of a river near a jungle. He used to cut wood in the jungle. By doing this hard task, he earned very he and somehow maintained his family.........

HONESTY IS THE BEST POLICY

Once there lived a woodcutter. He was very poor but honest. He lived on the bank of a river near a jungle. He used to cut wood in the jungle. By doing this hard task, he earned very he and somehow maintained his family. 

One day he went to the jungle to cut wood. While he was cutting wood, all on a sudden the axe fell into the river. There was strong current in the river The woodcutter tried heart and soul to find out his axe but failed. It was the only means of his! livelihood. 

He was too poor to buy another axe. He knew it very well that without this axe he and his family members would starve. Thinking this he sat motionless and began to cry like a child. A fairy heard him cry. She decided to test him. 

So, she came to him and asked him why he was crying. The woodcutter told her about his miserable condition and asked her if she could help him. Hearing this, the fairy felt pity for him and wanted to help him. But as she wanted to test him, she dived into the river and returned with a golden axe. Showing the golden axe she asked him if that was his axe. 

As he was honest, he told her that was not his. The fairy again dived into the water and came back with a silver axe and asked him if that was his axe. The man again replied in the negative. The fairy went into the river water for the third time and returned with the real axe. 

Seeing his lost axe, the wood cutter became very happy and told her that was his axe. He thanked her and showed his gratefulness to her. The fairy was also very happy to see the honesty of the poor woodcutter and wished to reward him. 

She offered him all the three axes as reward and forbade him to say 'No'. The woodcutter happily accepted the award. From the story, we learn that honesty is the best policy and we all should be honest.

অন্য কুঠার কেনার জন্য সে খুবই দরিদ্র ছিল। তিনি ভাল করেই জানতেন যে এই কুড়াল ছাড়া তিনি এবং তার পরিবারের সদস্যরা অনাহারে থাকবেন। এই ভেবে সে নিশ্চল হয়ে বসে রইল এবং শিশুর মতো কাঁদতে লাগল। একটা পরী তার কান্না শুনতে পেল। তিনি তাকে পরীক্ষা করার সিদ্ধান্ত নিয়েছে।

তাই, সে তার কাছে এসে তাকে জিজ্ঞেস করল কেন সে কাঁদছে। কাঠমিস্ত্রি তাকে তার করুণ অবস্থার কথা বলেছিল এবং তাকে জিজ্ঞাসা করেছিল যে সে তাকে সাহায্য করতে পারে কিনা। এই কথা শুনে পরী তার জন্য করুণা অনুভব করল এবং তাকে সাহায্য করতে চাইল। কিন্তু সে তাকে পরীক্ষা করতে চেয়েছিল, সে নদীতে ডুব দিল এবং সোনার কুড়াল নিয়ে ফিরে গেল। সোনার কুড়ালটি দেখিয়ে তিনি তাকে জিজ্ঞাসা করলেন এটি কি তার কুড়াল।

যেহেতু তিনি সৎ ছিলেন, তিনি তাকে বলেছিলেন যে এটি তার নয়। পরী আবার জলে ঝাঁপ দিয়ে রুপার কুড়াল নিয়ে ফিরে এসে জিজ্ঞেস করল ওটা কি তার কুঠার? লোকটা আবার নেতিবাচক জবাব দিল। পরী তৃতীয়বার নদীর জলে গিয়ে আসল কুড়াল নিয়ে ফিরেছে।

তার হারিয়ে যাওয়া কুড়ালটি দেখে কাঠ কাটার খুব খুশি হল এবং তাকে বলল এটা তার কুড়াল। তিনি তাকে ধন্যবাদ জানালেন এবং তার প্রতি কৃতজ্ঞতা প্রকাশ করলেন। দরিদ্র কাঠঠোকরার সততা দেখে পরীও খুব খুশি হল এবং তাকে পুরস্কৃত করতে চাইল।

There lived a woodcutter in a village. One day, he was cutting wood near a pond. Suddenly, his axe fell into the pond. The pond was very deep. The woodcutter did not know how to swim or dive. So, he was sitting there! sadly. Then, a wonderful thing happened. 

A beautiful fairy appeared before the woodcutter. She asked him in a sweet voice, “Why are you so sad? Why are you not cutting wood?” The woodcutter replied sorrowfully, "My axe has fallen into the pond. I can't cut wood now.” The fairy then showed him an axe made of silver and asked him if it was his axe. 

The woodcutter saw the axe and said, “It's not my axe.” The fairy showed him another axe made of gold and asked, “Is this the axe that you lost?” The woodcutter said, “No, it's not. My axe is made of iron. It was old.” The fairy showed him the lost axe with a wooden handle. The woodcutter then said happily that it was his axe. 

The fairy became very pleased and gave him the gold and the silver axes too as a reward of his honesty. The wood cutter became very happy getting the axes made of gold and silver. He thanked the fairy and went home. Later, selling those two axes in the market, he made quite a good amount of money. He became solvent and started passing his days happily ever after. Thus, the honest people are rewarded everywhere.

অর্থঃ এক গ্রামে এক কাঠমিস্ত্রি বাস করত। একদিন তিনি একটি পুকুরের কাছে কাঠ কাটছিলেন। হঠাৎ তার কুড়াল পুকুরে পড়ে যায়। পুকুরটি অনেক গভীর ছিল। কাঠমিস্ত্রি সাঁতার বা ডুব দিতে জানত না। তো, সে ওখানে বসে ছিল! দুঃখজনকভাবে তারপর, একটি বিস্ময়কর ঘটনা ঘটেছে. কাঠঠোকরার সামনে এক সুন্দরী পরী হাজির।

পরী তাকে সোনার তৈরি আরেকটি কুড়াল দেখিয়ে জিজ্ঞেস করলো, "এই সেই কুড়ালটা কি তুমি হারিয়েছো?" কাঠমিস্ত্রি বলল, "না, এটা নয়। আমার কুঠারটা লোহার তৈরি, এটা পুরানো।" পরী তাকে একটি কাঠের হাতল দিয়ে হারিয়ে যাওয়া কুড়ালটি দেখাল। কাঠ কাটারটি তখন খুশি হয়ে বলল যে এটি তার কুঠার। 

পরী খুব খুশি হয়ে তাকে তার সততার পুরষ্কার হিসাবে স্বর্ণ ও রূপার কুড়ালটিও দিল। সোনা-রূপার তৈরি কুড়ালগুলো পেয়ে খুশি হয়ে পরীকে ধন্যবাদ জানিয়ে বাড়ি চলে গেল।পরে ওই দুটি কুড়াল বাজারে বিক্রি করে বেশ ভালো টাকা রোজগার করে সে স্বচ্ছল হয়ে উঠল এবং সুখে দিন কাটাতে লাগল। , সৎ লোকেরা সর্বত্র পুরস্কৃত হয়।
